Anoushka Shankar

Anoushka Shankar is an American-born British sitar player and music artist. She is the youngest woman and also the first woman to receive an official British House of Commons shield. Anoushka is the new star on the rise in Indian sitar. She is a student as well as daughter of the famous Ravi Shankar. Born in London, she spent the early years of her life bouncing between London as well as New Delhi. At the age of 13, her first show in New Delhi took place. In the following years the same year, in Encinitas CA she attended high school. She graduated with distinction in 1999. Anouskha still has a promising career in recording and performing despite being young. Her father was with her on numerous occasions for several years. The first album she released as a solo artist, Anourag, was released in 1998. In 2002, she released her Grammy nominated album Live At Carnegie Hall. In addition to performing in every major venue, she also has an extensive stage presence. Anoushka Shakar's work is not only limited to music. Bapi The love of my life is an illustrated biography she penned in 2002. The book pays tribute to her father who died in the year 2000. Ravi Shankar. In 2003, she was an Bharat Natyam dancer in Dance Like a Man. Anoushka Shankar's work continues to unfold and we are likely to see a variety of things from her in the years to follow. Anoushka lived a long traveling between London and Delhi in her early years. After that, she moved to California to attend high school. She began learning music when she was nine years old and was a sitar player in celebration of the 75th anniversary the birth of her father in Delhi four years later. Anoushka was able to gain many valuable experiences by accompanying her dad when he toured the world. This included performing in Carnegie Hall and at Peter Gabriel's WOMAD festivals in addition to making recordings together with George Harrison. She was the only female winner of the House of Commons Shield awarded by the British Parliament for her musicianship and talent as a preeminent musician of the Asian Arts.
